Laura Thomas, textile artist.
Woven textile Art & Vivid cotton, silk & lurex threads encapsulated in acrylic resin, creating dramatic results.
Born and brought up in Pembrokeshire, Laura Thomas studied woven textiles in the University of Central England, The Royal College of Art and then went on to become one of the founding Fellows of The Ann Sutton Foundation, a weave design research centre in Sussex.
Since completing her Fellowship in 2003, Laura has been working from her fully equipped studio in the centre of Cardiff, Wales, dividing her time between public art commissions, research, lecturing and freelance design consultancy to the home furnishings industry.
Amongst many notable achievements, Laura is a recent recipient of a prestigious Arts Council of Wales ‘Creative Wales’ 2007 Award. Laura also received a Theo Moorman Charitable Trust grant award in 2004 and the ‘Aran’ blanket designed for Melin Tregwnt won a Homes and Gardens Classic Design Award in 2001.
Laura has a Worshipful Company of Weavers wall hanging commission in the Victoria and Albert Museum permanent collection and has undertaken many other notable art commissions such as a textile triptych for the Crafts Study Centre in Farnham and a series of five suspended woven banners for the Bartholomew House Kings Fund Project, an NHS mental health teaching hospital in Hull, UK.
In March 2008, Laura was commissioned to respond to the Blaenavon World Heritage Site and make public art proposals.
